Born in 1873, he enlisted as a Regular soldier in the 1st Battalion DLI in 1892. He served during the Boer War and was Mentioned in Despatches three times. In 1904, he was appointed Regimental Sergeant-Major of the 1st Battalion and remained RSM until 1914, when he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.
He continued to serve with 1 DLI and spent the Great War in India on the North West Frontier and took part in the 3rd Afghan War of 1919.
He finally retired in 1920, as a Captain, after 28 years service with the 1st Battalion DLI.
Charles Waiton died in 1938, aged 64.
